MICRO INCISION VITRECTOMY SYSTEM (M.I.V.S.) AT RETINA INSTITUTE OF KARNATAKA.

WHAT IS M.I.V.S.?

Vitrectomy as we know involves making holes (about 1.15mm diameter) in the white part of our eye -the sclera to gain access into the vitreous cavity and the
retina. Conventionally stitches are placed at the end of surgery to close these holes which heal over a few weeks.

In micro incision vitrectomy the size of the hole is much smaller, that is less than 0.72mm in diameter and is made with specialized instruments therefore
they are self sealing i.e. they close by themselves without the need for stitches.

HOW IS MICROINCISION

VITRECTOMY PERFORMED?

Micro incision vitrectomy is done with a specialized vitrectomy system called CONSTELLATION.

WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF MICROINCISION VITRECTOMY?

It has significant advantages over conventional vitrectomy systems like,

WHAT ARE THE RETINAL DISEASES FOR WHICH MICROINCISION VITRECTOMY CAN BE DONE?

WHAT ARE THE LIMITATIONS OF MICROINCISION VITRECTOMY?

Micro incision vitrectomy is not done in all types vitrectomies for retinal diseases. In retinal diseases requiring scleral buckling with vitrectomy or in eyes with
advanced retinal disease where extensive membrane surgery is required a micro incision vitrectomy is not suitable.

Whenever you are advised vitrectomy by your retina specialist at RIK you can discuss with him and opt for the MICROINCISION VITRECTOMY SYSTEM ( M.I.V.S.) Patient information literature/MIVS/10-08-2010/RIK/SYN.
